Before the music begins, the norns as children tells about what is going to happen in a dialogue taken from Siegfried's Death. This scene sets the premises for the action as Kinderspiel. What is play? What is make believe?

In the booklet the production is called a comedy of manners using mythological material.

In the beginning of the Rhinemaidens scene Alberich and Wotan are equals, and both are present on stage. When the Rhinemaidens appear, Alberch takes the initiative to talk to them - to Wotan's annoyance. Now Schwarz-Alberich and Licht-Alberich takes on their respective roles as god and dwarf. Wotan puts on his eyepatch and Alberich the dwarf shoes on his knees. The drama is a role play.

The production looks very good on DVD. The filming is first class, and the lighting is especially good, something that cannot be taken for granted today. The mix between close-ups and long shots are very good. I wish the video editors of the Copenhagen Ring had learnt a lesson or two from these guys. That said, The Copenhagen Ring offers a more exciting theatre music experience, and the musical level is higher on the Copenhagen set.
