Simon Estes

Estes and Balslev in The Flying Dutchman in BayreuthSimon Estes was the first black male singer to perform in Bayreuth. In Bayreuth he made great success with Der fliegende Holländer and Amfortas (Parsifal).

Although Estes has been identified most frequently with the Flying Dutchman (the role that catapulted his career), he has also been a superb Wotan and Wanderer for many years, singing this role in most of the great opera houses. His Wagner repertoire also included King Marke in Tristan and Isolde and Landgraf (Tannhäuser).
