This is the sound-track of the Bavarian
State Opera production by Nikolaus
Lehnhoff, as recorded in 1989 for television. The cast is as fine as any
in rival versions in the digital age, the performances gain in dramatic
momentum and expressive spontaneity from being recorded live, and - rather
surprisingly - the sound is outstandingly rich, warm and spaciously atmospheric,
in many ways outshining rival digital recordings. Sawallisch conducts with
a thrust and energy, not always present in his studio recordings with speeds
faster than have become common.
