Birgit Nilsson: La Nilsson (autobiography)

Wonderful autobiography by the greatest dramatic soprano since Kirsten Flagstad.

Birgit Nilsson writes quite frankly about her friends in the opera world, her Bayreuth years, her many roles, her favourite conductors.

A lot of anectodes and gossip, refreshingly told the Nilsson way. How about Wolfgang Wagner letting the air out of the tyres on the car someone had parked on his parking space? This book is full of that kind of stories.

It is very interesting to read her derogatory remarks on Pierre Boulez, who conducted Tristan und Isolde in Osaka (a performance only available on bootleg DVD). Her impression was that Boulez was not prepared at all for Tristan. She was not very happy with the fast tempi Boulez chose.
