Poul Elming is one of many great Wagner singers from Denmark. His Siegmund and Parsifal rank among the very best, and his appearences at Bayreuth sent him off to an adventurous career all around the world, especially in Wagner roles. Now Elming
is general manager of The Aalborg Symphony Orchestra. His Siegmund in the Kupfer/Barenboim Ring from Bayreuth can be experienced on DVD. Elming is the man behind The Lauritz Melchior International Singing Competition, 6-13 November 2010.

Since Elming's appointment as general manager of The Aalborg Symphony Orchestra it has been his ambition to create a large-scale project which would attract extraordinary attention and bring new focus to the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, our city and our region. The project Elming ended up with was The Lauritz Melchior International Singing Competition.

The Purpose of the Competition
- to honour one of the greatest Wagnerian singers of all time, the Danish Heldentenor Lauritz Melchior
- to seek and promote the best young contemporary Wagnerian singers
- to increase the significance of the city of Aalborg and the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra in the musical world
The Lauritz Melchior international Singing Competition 6-13 November 2010 - the rounds
- Preliminary Round, with piano accompaniment – November 6th, 2010
- Quarterfinal, with piano accompaniment – November 7th, 2010
- Semifinal, with The Aalborg Symphony Orchestra – November 10th, 2010
- Gala Finale, with The Aalborg Symphony Orchestra – November 13th, 2010
All four rounds will be open to the public. At the Semifinale and Gala Finale there will be an admission fee for the audience.
Number of Participants
- 16 participants will be accepted for the Preliminary Round.
- 12 participants will be accepted for the Quarterfinal.
- 8 participants will be accepted for the Semifinal.
- 4 participants will be accepted for the Gala Finale.
